“What’s this add up to? I’d say H.264 still offers better quality, but the difference wouldn’t be noticeable in most applications.” —

First Look: H.264 and VP8 Compared - StreamingMedia.com

What this comparison tells me is that video technology has been standing still, ironically, for quite some time. Not only tech, but the commercial opportunities that could stimulate video innovation as well. VP8 does not have to beat H.264 feature for feature. “VP8 is not ready for prime-time; the spec is a pile of copy-pasted C code and the encoder’s interface is lacking in features and buggy. They aren’t even ready to finalize the bitstream format, let alone switch the world over to VP8.” —

Diary Of An x264 Developer » The first in-depth technical analysis of VP8

Great analysis of VP8 by an amazing x264 engineer. But even with all the issues pointed out, it is a snapshot in time and there are many moves yet in this game begun some years ago. Google just open sourced a free baseline codec that will work without plugins. Could there be any better strategy now while the border around video is permeable? This is a Queen’s Gambit, for sure!

“Numerous sources are telling me that Google plans to announce hardware support for VP8. If true, and VP8 does what it On2 claimed it could, the possibility does exist for VP8 to seriously challenge H.264 over time if Google can get enough hardware support, which I think they have a good shot at doing,” Rayburn said.” —Google video effort to be dubbed WebM Project? | Deep Tech - CNET News
